What is a business plan?

A written statement of what you want to achieve and how your'e going to achieve it.

Activity and skills required, mission and values
Resources and equipment needed (overheads)
Marketing, 4 Ps, monitoring your competitors
Money, finance needed, budgeting, money management systems

Why do we need one?

If you can write a detailed business pitch, it will make you focus your efforts, clear some objectives, enable you to track your growth and will attract collaborators.

Where to find a business plan

A high street bank... Barclays
The Arts Council

Where to find funding

By helping others to get grants

Cooperative?

How do we get organised?

Meredith Belbin: Organisation theory- 9 different roles in a team.

  1. Completer finisher
  2. Implementer
  3. Shaper
  4. Co-ordinator
  5. Resource investigator
  6. Team worker
  7. Monitor evaluator
  8. Plant
  9. Specialist
People can play more than one role in a team.

Charles Handy:
Power culture- Small organisation. One boss, family restaurant for example
Role culture- Large organisation. Principle, series of deans and directors, self contained
Task culture- Freelance people get together to create something. No hierarchy. Just a team of people on an equal level.
Person culture- Key people in a business, and people who support them. A dental practice for example, a few dentists and nurses, receptionists, cleaners etc supporting them.

if you earn more than 70,000 then you are obliged to pay VAT... meaning you have to add an extra 20% on every customers invoice... which is horrible. A way to get around this is to have separate registered businesses for different aspects of your business as a whole.

The only advantage of VAT is that you can claim it back on all materials you buy, but this isn't a great advantage.
